What is print on demand?
Print on demand (POD) means you create designs and upload them to a platform. When a customer orders a product with your design, the platform prints it, packs it, and ships it directly to them. You earn the difference between your selling price and the platform's base cost. You never touch the stock, never pay for inventory, and never deal with shipping.
The business model is genuinely passive once set up, designs keep selling indefinitely. The challenge is creating designs that people actually want to buy.
What sells well
Niche is everything in POD. Generic designs compete with millions of others. Niche designs, for specific hobbies, professions, towns, sports teams, or communities, face far less competition and convert better because they feel personal to the buyer.
Strong performing niches consistently include: professions (nurses, teachers, engineers), hobbies (dog breeds, cycling, gardening), local pride (city and county designs), humour targeted at specific groups, and seasonal/event designs (Christmas, Father's Day, graduations).
Use free tools like Canva to create clean, simple text-based designs to start. You don't need to be a graphic designer, bold typography with a clever phrase outperforms complex illustrations on most POD products.
Realistic income expectations
POD is a slow burn. Most new stores make their first sale within 2–4 weeks if listed on Etsy, but consistent income takes 3–6 months to build as listings gain SEO traction. The advantage is that it compounds, each new design adds to your catalogue and each sale adds to your ranking.
Sellers with 100+ designs across well-chosen niches typically earn £200–£500/month passively. Top sellers with 500+ designs and strong SEO earn £1,000+/month from largely passive income.
How to get started today
Sign up to Printful (free). Create an Etsy seller account (£0.16 per listing). Create 10 designs in Canva around a specific niche you understand. Upload them as products on Printful, connect to Etsy, and publish. Optimise your Etsy listing titles with keywords people actually search for, use the Etsy search bar to see what autocompletes.
Treat the first month as research, see which designs get the most views, and double down on that niche. Delete designs that get zero traction after 60 days and replace them.
